About Us
DEYÀ Retreats curates place-based experiences in rare locations that have soul.
Founded by Dr. Amy Finlay-Jones, a psychologist, academic and compassion facilitator, and Michael van Koesveld, a humanitarian worker, counsellor and hospitality worker, we bring together contemplative practice, culture, food, and nature to connect people deeply—with themselves, with others, and with the spirit of place.
DEYÀ Family
Places choose their people, we've learned.
After years of living across continents - Amy as a global compassion educator and Michael through humanitarian work - we recognise locations that demand attention rather than consumption.
Our daughter Deià, named for the Mallorcan village that took and enlarged our hearts, reminds us daily that connection isn't constructed - it's discovered. Through presence and patient attention to what already exists in and around us.
DEYÀ Philosophy
The foundation of authentic connection
Our approach emerges from understanding that meaningful transformation occurs through patient attention to what already exists within ourselves and our environments. Genuine connection—whether to self, others, or place—must be discovered through presence and respectful engagement rather than transactional experiences. Certain locations possess inherent capacity to facilitate this discovery, serving as generous partners in the process of renewal.
Compassion as framework for relationship
Drawing from Dr. Amy Finlay-Jones's scientific expertise, we integrate evidence-based compassion practices as foundational frameworks for deeper connection. Self-compassion involves taking a mindful approach towards our struggles and supporting ourselves authentically. We extend this same understanding to others and the places we inhabit. This approach moves us from tendencies of self-criticism toward self-kindness, common humanity, and mindful awareness—creating emotional safety necessary for genuine encounter. Reciprocal engagement with place and culture
Our commitment to thoughtful travel reflects deliberate investment in reciprocal, sustainable relationships with communities and environments. We understand that local and indigenous peoples maintain unique, sacred connections to their places that require respect. We are also alert to the harm that can be caused by tourism and work actively to mitigate these impacts. As guests in these landscapes, we contribute meaningfully to local economies and cultural preservation while learning from accumulated wisdom. This approach demands patience, humility, and genuine interest in understanding cultural knowledge.
Collaborative stewardship and social responsibility
We collaborate with local practitioners, artisans, artists and guides who possess intimate knowledge of their places, ensuring our retreats support community resources through partnerships built on mutual respect and shared benefit. Authentic cultural exchange enriches all participants when approached with proper care. As a company and family, we maintain clear commitments to antiracist practice, gender and sexual diversity, human rights advocacy, and philanthropic investment in local and global causes aligned with our values of justice and human dignity.
